Literature and History: The Development of American Culture to 1865

Updated Reading Schedule from Professor Meyer

Greetings class,

We’ve gotten a little off-track, so I’m making some changes to the syllabus.  I will hand out a physical copy in class too, but here it is:

11/4–Finish “The Coquette”; Fanny Fern, “Male Criticism on Ladies’ Books” (1799-1800) and “A Law More Nice Than Just” (1802-1803).

11/11–William Apess (1051-1058) and John Augustus Stone’s Metamora and Washington Irving’s “Phillip of Pokanoket”.  Follow the link in each for a copy of these last two readings.

11/18–Melville, “Benito Cereno” (2405-2461)

11/25–Thanksgiving Break; no class.

12/2–Davis, Life in the Iron Mills (2599-2625) and Melville, “The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids” (2389-2405)

12/9–Douglass, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (2064-2129) and in-class writing workshop on paper #2

12/16–Emily Dickinson poems (those numbered 194, 225, 591, 764) and Walt Whitman, “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” (2263-2267)
